The Wonderful Game, And Something Better
A short story about a possible future.
My wife and I were at home together. Zion was redeemed. We got on our laptops and both logged on to The World.
* * *
On our first day of playing, the computer had scanned our faces, bodies, body movements and lip movements. We had been asked if we wanted to wear the clothes we had on in real life in the game, or if we wanted different clothes. I wanted a yellow shirt. She wanted a beautiful yellow dress. We both spawned in the same place: One of the cities of the Sun. There was more than one city of the sun, but we were in one that was below the equator. I had assisted a man in building a statue by trading him a small mining tool (a pickaxe) that I had started out with (both my wife and I had started out with up to fifty items of our choice each) that helped him do his work faster, for a much larger mining tool (a drilling vehicle with treads). My wife and I had ridden around in it until we ran into Ben, who also happened to be in that city. We picked him up and he rode with us.
The first thing my wife and I did the first day we had logged in after setting up our characters, was friending each other, so that if we got separated, we could both talk to each-other through chat and teleport to each other’s locations. My friend Shane joined us when he brought his laptop over several days into playing the game, and he friended both of us. We all had friended Ben.
When my wife and I started in the city of the sun, I cannot begin to describe to you how breathtaking and beautiful it was.
Now on this day, about two months into playing the game, I was traveling with Shane (who physically was in a different location than me in the real world) and we were in a wilderness place. It too was beautiful. My wife was not physically in the same place with me at this point, nor was she logged on to the game. Ben was not logged on either.
Shane built a fire. He cooked some fish. He traded one cooked fish to me for nothing in return, and ate one. I ate the other. Immediately I heard the doorbell ring in my house and I answered it. A man in a robe delivered me a sumptuous fish sandwich with tomatoes and mayonnaise. I ate it and thanked God for it. I told Shane thanks. We moved on. There were lots of animals. We were able to feed some of them. Others we pet. Then we came across a shop where camels were sold by a NPC. We bought a camel (I did, actually) and we went faster. We came to a river and we followed it until we came to a bridge, a magnificent stone bridge. We crossed. Then we came to a wonderful city. Just then my wife walked in the front door. She saw the city.
“Oh, that’s beautiful!” she exclaimed. “Just let me take care of a few things and I’ll join you.”
My wife was 6 month pregnant with our first child. I had married her a year and a half ago.
Soon, my wife logged in. She was at a huge mall in a city called Mitenopania in the northern hemisphere of The World. She marked her location (meaning she could come back to it at any time) and teleported to my location. Shane had to log out; he had things he had to do. So she took Shane’s place on the camel and we rode into the city.
