Dedicated to God and His Son Jesus and His Spirit, and to Colin Callus Winstead II, known as 'Pastor Pete' to the locals in my place of Residence, for whom this treatise was researched and written to.
CHAPTER ONE
The Basic Christian Nondenominational Doctrines Supported by the Book of Mormon.
(Special Thanks to Lynn Ridenhour, from whom I will be borrowing heavily, albeit in my own words-BLS)
The Former book I wrote, Go Beyond Proof, Pastor Pete, showed how to develop a mind less like a sponge and more like a strainer. But to go from having a strainer like mind to a mind more like a sieve, I ask you, Pastor Pete, to pray for discernment and wisdom and knowledge daily, as proscribed in James 1:5. In this book, it is not my design to take a "I was right, you were wrong" approach nor to talk down to you as if you were a child and I were your teacher. That is not my intent, nor ought it to be, for it is not even close to the Truth. I speak to you as a brother, as a father to me, and as a friend, equal to me in intelligence, wisdom, responsibility, and sagacity, and have the understanding that you have spent most of your adult years in the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
But let me provide you with a background for the information I am about to share with you:
The Book of Mormon is a record of God's dealings with three groups of migrants to the American Continents, whose descendants eventually became their Aborigines. Two of those groups of migrants came from Israel. One, the Jaredites, came from the Tower of Babel.
I ask you to kindly reserve judgment as to whether the events described in the Book of Mormon actually happened to real people until you have done your own investigation and either did or did not, after the trial of your faith, receive the Testimony promised in the last book of the work, Moroni, to all who ask for it in faith believing, with real intent. Hold your judgment on whether or not that was a true sentence preceding this one until you know of yourself. This paragraph was only meant to provide context for what follows, not to convince you of anything one way or another.
It is my assertion that the Book of Mormon supports every major Bible doctrine you, Pastor Pete, believe in, whether or not it is true.
Although I will be putting this in my own words, I will borrow Lynn Ridenhour's order, adding Bible references as well as referencing the Book of Mormon. All Book of Mormon references are from the Authorized 1908 version or the Restored Covenant Edition also as far as versification is concerned.
Unless otherwise noted, all references to the Bible are from the Authorized 1611 King James Bible. All references to the Apocrypha are from the Media Solution Services version, printed in South Korea, or The Lost Books of The Bible and The Forgotten Books of Eden. All references to the Church Fathers are from NewAdvent.com. Other references are to the RLDS and LDS Doctrine and Covenants, and possibly other sources, which will be noted, with proper citations.
FIRST, the Bible and Book of Mormon uplift the blood of Christ.
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forebearance of God;
Book of Mormon, Mosiah 1:118 But men drink damnation to their own souls, except they humble themselves, and become as little children, and believe that salvation was, and is, and is to come, in and through the atoning blood of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent:
SECOND, the Book of Mormon and the Bible declare that salvation is only by God's grace.
Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand.
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Ephesians 2:8,9-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; but it is the gift of God;
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
James 2:14-26 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food,
15 If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you shall say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it have not works is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe, and tremble.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well; the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness; and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 For, as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
II Nephi 11:44 For we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all that we can do.
II Nephi 7:42 And remember, that after ye are reconciled to God, that it is only in and through the grace of God that ye are saved.
